Mild asymptomatic patients who are not using any inhalers BUT still smoking should be followed up annually for spirometry.

(These patients can be excepted from QOF)

Symptomatic patients with mild COPD need to be seen annually.

If the appointment is in the summer it’s important to remember action plans and stand by medication for the winter where appropriate.

Moderate severe and very severe COPD patients need to be seen six monthly, or more frequently if deemed necessary. Some of these patients are also being followed up by the hospital chest clinic, so surgery clinic visits may need to be changed accordingly.

Again stand by medication and action plans should be checked at each visit.

COPD self management booklets are enclosed overleaf.
